Students were located at sixteen shelters to assist personnel in sheltering local civilians from the approaching hurricane. Ivan, an extremely dangerous category four hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane scale, has maximum sustained winds near 140 mph with higher gusts. Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 100 miles from the center and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 260 miles. The well-defined eye of hurricane Ivan was located about 405 miles south-southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River.
