After the waste has been soaked Eoi -Ihours, it is lifted out of the oil and placedon a screen and left to drain until all theextra or excess oil has dripped hours should be taken forthe draining, after which the waste canbe placed in closed cans ready for use. A very convenient and efficient tank isshown by Fig. 3. The dry waste is placedin sections 1, 2 and 3, and fresh oil in sec-tion 5. By means of the pump at the rightnt the tank on top, the oil in section 5 ispumped into chambers 1, 2 and 3. Afterthe waste has soaked for the 24 hours, theoil is drained back into section 5 and usedover again when new waste is put into1, 2 and 3. The sections 4 and 6 are usedfor resaturating old waste, so that the oil it is cusloinarj to use alight or thin oil in winter, uh>weather exists, and a thick oil in FIG. 3. TANK FOR SATURATING WOOLWASTE. is kept separate. It will be noted thatlarge clean-out plugs are provided forboth oil chambers, and float gauges arealso used to indicate the amount of oilin them. We have seen how the waste should betreated before used. Hot bearings maybe due to poor lubrication or to an in-ferior grade of oil. The right lubricantmust be used, applied correctly and theproper amount. The bearing must bepacked correctly as well. It has beenmentioned above that a neutral oil shouldbe used. Oils are either animal, vegetableor mineral. For bearing use in railwayand industrial service a good grade ofneutral mineral oil is required. It free from acid or alkali, as the presenceof either will corrode the bright surfacesof the metal. The oil must be free fromdirt and water. Water reduces the lubri-cating value of the oil, as it tends to wipethe oil from the journ
