David P. Anderson, US computer scientist. Dr Anderson is a research scientist at the Space Sciences Laboratory, University of California, Berkeley, USA. In 1999 he and colleagues from the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI) created Seti@Home, a system that could harness the power of a supercomputer by using idle time on personal computers owned by the public. This system, known as distributed, or volunteer computing, functions on software called BOINC (Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing). BOINC is also used for a number of other distributed computing projects, such as those for climate prediction and protein shape prediction. Photographed in 2008.
