Chikungunya viral research. Scientist studying blood samples for presence of the Chikungunya virus during an epidemic on Reunion Island. The Chikungunya virus is an alphavirus, which is transmitted by mosquitoes and causes a rare form of viral fever. Symptoms include a high fever, rash and arthritic joint pain. There is currently no vaccine for the virus. Photographed at the CHD Bellepierre hospital, Reunion Island, in February 2006.
