Light micrograph of the shell of a Foraminifera, Nonionina depressula. The order Foraminifera comprises unicellular protozoans whose shells form an important component of chalk and of many deep sea oozes. Foraminifera live entirely in the sea or salt-water lakes. Their shells are in most cases composed of several chambers which are usually penetrated by pores through which the cellular contents (protoplasm) are extruded. The shell of the Nonionina depressula is made of calcium carbonate and this specimen was found near the island of Helgoland, North Sea. Magnification: x60 at 35mm size.
