. Elgin past and present : a historical guide / by Herbert B. Mackintosh. ELGIN PAST AND PRESENT 55 was a strong patriot, and preached to his diocese that it was no lessmeritorious to rise in arms to support the Bruce than to engage in acrusade against the Saracens. Edward I. of England charged BishopDavid with assenting to the murder of the Cumin before the Altar of theChurch at Dumfries, and had him and others excommunicated byCardinal St Sabinus of Spain, the Papal Legate in England. BishopDavid fled to Orkney, returning to his diocese immediately after thedeath of Edward in 1307. David, like all the other recorded membersof his race, stands out a strong, commanding and chivalrousindividuality. He died in January 1325, bequeathing funds for the benefit offour poor scholars from Moray repairing to the Paris University fortheir education. Little as we know about Bishop David the factthat he was the founder of what afterwards became known as TheScots College in Paris will always claim grateful recognition. He wasburied in the choir of the Cathedral. (Notes
