Beneath this network was gummed apiece of fine cloth, open like canvas, called quin-tain (from the town in Brittany where it wasmade). Then with a needle the network wassewn to the quintain by edging round thoseparts of the pattern which were to remain thick,then cutting away the superfluous cloth :hence the name of cutwork in England.
