At the pumping station the condition of the valve hetween the old reservoirand the pump well is doubtful, and, to ensure against contamination through afault in this valve, it would seem advisable to test the existing valve; if it showssigns of leaking, it would be better to do away with this Plate 8. If at any time the water level in the pure water reservoir fell below the levelof the water in the outside reservoir, and there were faults in the concrete dividingwall between the old and new reservoirs or in the concrete floor of the latter, con-tamination of the pure water by outside water is inevitable, because the analysisof the water in the old reservoir, the physical condition of its bottom, the heavygrowth of water plants and the human excreta on its banks all point to the dangerof allowing any water from this reservoir to enter the water supply of the town. On April 31st there was a very distinct leak through the dividing wall fromthe now reservoir into the old. and the location of this leak is shown on plate 8. Conclusion. The general condition of the pipe, as far as could be seen from the portionslaid bare for inspection, was very good, and from our inspection we conclude thatthere is a probability of the infection having
