Breast cancer surgery. Image 9 of 9. Stapled and stitched breast of a woman who has undergone a modified radical mastectomy. This operation involved the entire breast tissue and surrounding lymph nodes being removed in order to remove malignant (cancerous) tumours. The surgeon then reconstructed the breast by moving part of the latissimus dorsi back muscle into the breast and inserting a prosthetic implant. The nipple (right) is blue because a tracing dye was injected into the breast to highlight the lymph nodes for removal. For a series showing this procedure, see images M122/497 - M122/505.
