Gaston Phoebus (1331-1391) teaching venery. 1878 illustration of a 15th century manuscript depicting the French hunter Gaston Phoebus (Febus) count of Foix teaching the art of venery (hunting game). Phoebus was the eleventh count of Fois and one of the greatest huntsmen of his day. His 'Livre de chasse' (Book of the Hunt, 1387-1389) and other treatise became the standard text on mediaeval hunting techniques.
