Greater Manchester Policing operation at Barton Moss as protesters seek to delay and obstruct delivery vehicles and drilling equipment en-route to the controversial gas exploration site. Fracking protestors have set up a camp at Barton Moss Road, Eccles a potential methane-gas extraction site in Salford, Greater Manchester.
"Anti-fracking protesters demonstrating after two of their fellow demonstrators were arrested. Anti-fracking protesters at Barton Moss are claiming victory after a judge said that they cannot be charged with obstructing a highway. Fifty people arrested by Greater Manchester Police at the site could now walk free - because Judge Khalid Qureshi ruled that Barton Moss Road in Salford is a public footpath. Prosecutors accepted at Manchester Magistrates Court that charges of obstructing a highway against the protesters should be dropped. Lawyers for the campaigners - who are opposed to energy company iGas drilling for gas at the site, off Barton Moss Road - now say all those arrested by GMP are likely to walk free, and they slammed GMP for arresting dozens of protesters on ‘unlawful’ grounds - adding that the court hearings had been a waste of public money."
