ACROPODIUM. A word coinedfrom the Greek, thoughnot found in any Greekauthor ; the exact mean-ing of which is open tosome doubts; but themost probable interpre-tation seems to be, thelow square plinth com-monly seen under thefeet of a marble statue(Hygin. Fab. 88.), as inthe illustration, whichrepresents the statue ofJuno, placed in front ofa temple, from the Vati-can Virgil. This acro-podium formed a component part ofthe statue itself; but it also served asa sort of upper basement or podium. (aKpov irofiiov) for the figure to rest on,when it was placed in an elevatedposition, or upon a regular base con-structed for the purpose, as in the il-lustration. ACROTERIA (aKpor^pia).
