The total cost of the tunnel was $26,000,-000, and it is an interesting fact that when tunnel-ling was first projected in 1825 the cost wasestimated at §1,948,557. The year 1874 marks thepoint at which the Fitchburg Railroad ceases to beof local importance only. The volume of cerealproducts coming East and of manufactured articlesgoing West was already enormous, and the finalopening of the tunnel gave the opportunity of or-ganizing another route by which a share of the busi-ness could be attracted to Boston.
