At length Galerius being afflicted with anincurable and dreadful disease, published an edict or-dering the persecution to cease, and restoring freedomto the Christians, whom he had most inhumanly op-pressed for eight years. Galerius died the same year;and in a short time after, when Constantino the Greatascended the throne, the Christians were freed fromany farther uneasiness, by his abrogating all thepenal laws against them, and afterwards issuingedicts, by which no other religion than the Christianwas tolerated throughout the 92 THE BISHOPS OF ROME.
