The spindle ends are made of high carbonsteel and pressed into these discs, thus making a light and strongconstruction. Fach part can be machined all over, and thebalancing difficulties usually encountered are thereby largelyeliminated. The first series of blades are of drop-forged steeland let into the dove-tailed grooves of the cylinder and low-pressure blades are constructed of delta metal so as toprevent any corrosion due to wet steam at the point. The cyl-inder is of ordinary close-grained cast iron. Steam enters 394 STREET RAILWAY JOURNAL. [Vol. XXV. No. through a main stop valve of the disc type, whichis operated by gear wheels connected to handleson the platform, then passes through an emer-gency shut-down valve, steam strainer and gov-ernor valve of the double-seat poppet type intothe center of the cylinder. A centrifugal governordirectly driven through gearing from the turbineshaft operates this poppet valve through a smallsteam relay, and the admission valve is thereforeunder the direct control of the speed of the tur-bine. An emergency governor is fitted at the op-posite end of the spindle to which the centrifugalgovernor is attached, and is set so that, shouldanything happen to the governor and the speed ofthe turbine reach a predetermined maximum, thisgovernor comes into operation and opens a smallvalve, which closes the emergency throttle valvebefore referred to. From the center of the cylin-der the steam issues through a series of nozzlesand impulse blades (until it has been expanded toabout at
