Appendicectomy scar on the abdomen of a patient. Appendicectomy, the surgical removal of the appendix, is performed to treat acute inflammations of the appendix. This is a small, finger-shaped tube with no known function that branches off the initial part of the large intestine. The inflammation was caused in this case by the presence of a metaplastic polyp which also required a hemicolectomy, the removal of a major part of the colon. This explains the length of the incision made which, in a \common\" appendicectomy, is about 2-3cm long."
