R. P. Smith, On January 19, 1904, in a little cot-tage on Crabtree Creek, in HaywoodCounty, Mrs. E. H. Bales opened thedoors as the Matron and head of theCrabtree Orphanage, afterwards calledThe Mountain Orphanage. The home began with about six chil-dren, sponsored by Asheville Presbyterythrough the Home Missions Commit-tee, and under the direct leadership ofthe late Dr. R. P. Smith, who served asSuperintendent of Home Missions andEvangelist in Asheville Presbytery from1897 to 1926, and continued as Superin-tendent Emeritus until his death, Febru-ary 4, 1936. In 1899, two years after Asheville Pres-bytery was organized, and under theleadership of Rev. S. C. Caldwell, pastorat Henedsonville, and Evangelist of thePresbytery, a school was started on Crab-tree Creek. It was to cost $ whencompleted.
