Newspaper Attack Resented Railway at Albany Seeking to ResumeService After Strike Sues for$100,000 in Damages Harry B. Weatherwax, vice-presidentof the United Traction Company, Al-bany, N. Y., has reiterated the stand ofthe company to the effect that no mat-ter what develops the company will notarbitrate or compromise with the menin any way and that all relations be-tween the company and the unionceased on Jan. 29, when the strike wasdeclared. Mr. Weatherwax is quoted as fol-lows: The company receives about $300,000 amonth from operation. This company can-not pay 60 cents an hour and make raise fares to meet that cost would beimpossible, because residents will not payit. There is no use in raising wages andthen going- to the Public Service Commis-sion and asking for an increased fare. Thatis what it amounts to every time wagesare STATE CONSTABULARY CARS We can give a good service at 45 centsan hour, and residents will not be calledupon to pay higher fares. We might justas well have this issue settled now. We have recruited a good force to takethe place of the striking employees. Theyhave come to us at 45 cents an hour. Wewill start regular service within a fewdays. The men who are operating the carsnow will not be retained. The force thatis being recruited will be a permanent one. We are receiving letters every day fromall parts of the east from men who are ex-perienced conductors and motormen andare willing to work at 45 cents an hour. The question of arbitration is closed forall time. There is no use discussing thismatter any further. We are going to oper-ate our company on the 45-cent basis, andthats all there is to it. The company also said it had broughtsuit against the Albany Evening UnionCompany, publisher of the Times-Union,to recover the sum of $100,000 dam
