Diagram showing the structure of a monopile support for an offshore wind turbine. Monopile foundations are used on the majority of offshore wind farms. The monopile foundation (red) is hammered into the seabed and then topped with a transition piece (yellow). The two pieces are fixed together with grout. The wind turbine tower is then attached to the transition piece. Electrical cables feed into the bellmouths from the ocean floor and are carried upwards in the J pipe. The anodes (orange) on the monopile's steel casing are composed of reactive metal and act to protect the rest of the metal structure from corrosion.
