Hismother left inter-esting memoirswhich have beenedited many La Roche-j acquelein entered the military academy at Saint-Cyr atthe age of sixteen and in 1823 he received a commissionas second lieutenant in the cavalry. He took part in theSpanish War (1823) and in the Russo-Turkish War of1828. In 1825 he had been made a peer, but he re-signed shortly after the Revolution of 1S30, whichbrought the younger branch of the House of Bourbonto the throne of France. The Department of Morbi-. He took hisseat among the members of the Extreme Right, or Le-gitimist party, with whom he usually cast his vote,although he occasionally supported liberal the Gazette de France supported his can-didacy for the presidency of the newly establishedFrench Republic, but he obtained only an insignificantnumber of votes. In he was made a senator byNapoleon III, which caused some astonishment andcomment among his friends the Legitimists. In thesenate La Rochejacquelein always showed himself anardent defender of Catholicism, but he may be re-proached with having given his support to the wholeforeign policy of the imperial Government.
