The 79 eruption of Mt. Vesuvius buried the Roman town of Pompeii. Excavations continue now at the site. Among the areas uncovered are homes that had storefronts on the ground floor, such as this one which had amphorae set into the counters. Goods would have been kept in the amphorae. This practice of stores around the outside perimeter of a house was common. Often the shopkeeper and his family lived at the rear of the store. Some even had lofts for living area—note the stairs to the left in this photo.
