The New Jerusalem Monastery was founded in 1656 by Patriarch Nikon as a patriarchal residence in the outskirts of Moscow as "Russian Palestine" . It was modeled on Jerusalem even to the extent of renaming the Istra River the Jordan and the garden, Gethsemane, with the exact copy of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher with its topography and relics. Located in Istra town at Moscow Region,about 50 km from Moscow city .
