Sergio Cittolin, Italian particle physicist. Cittolin works at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, where he studies subatomic particle collisions. He helped design the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The LHC is a particle accelerator that will be able to collide particles with tera-electronvolt energies. It is hoped that study of these collisions will provide a greater understanding of the universe. Research will include study of the quantum causes of mass, and research into why there is more matter than antimatter in the universe. The LHC should be operational in 2006. Photographed in 2002.
