Fifteenth-Century Bakehouse, from an old book illustration

A baker and his assistant, wearing fifteenth-century costumes including smocks and hats, and either wearing hose (stockings, or long socks) on their legs or bare-legged and barefoot, are working in the baker. The baker uses a peel, a paddle, or baker's shovel, to put dough into the brick oven; his assistant is ready to hand him the next ball of dough for the next loaf. There is a tiled floor and decoration around the oven; in the background we see a shelf of presumably already-baked loaves of bread. The drawing is from a 19th century engraving reproducing a15th century illustration.
