Memorial to American Merchant Mariners in Battery Park, Manhattan, New York
The American Merchant Mariners Memorial in Battery Park at the southern end of Manhattan honors merchant mariners who died during U. S. wars. The sculpture by Marisol is on a breakwater in the Hudson River and is based on an event in World War II when a German U boat torpedoed a merchant marine ship and photographed the victims as the ship sank. Behind the memorial is Pier A, which was built in 1886 for the New York City Department of Docks and Ferries. It has been vacant for years. The memorial for American Merchant Mariners honors sailors who died during US wars. The sculpture by Marisol depicts the scene when a merchant ship was sunk by a German U boat. The victims were photographed as the ship sank.
