But although the situation is as unfavorable as possible, themachine is in daily use throughout the year. Since these lines werewritten t|ie room has been divided crosswise into two rooms by aboard partition. In the one in which the static machine and motorstand a radiator has been placed, which keeps the machine warm anddry and yet does not overheat the other room, in which the patients areexamined and which contains the stretcher, tube, and other appliances. 16 THE ROENTGEN RAYS IN MEDICINE AND SURGERY In the partition there are two plates of. glass, near the centre of eachof which is a small hole through which the wires pass from the staticmachine to the X-ray tube. Adjustable Spark-gap. — The spark-gap in series with the tube isthe air space through which the current must leap before reaching thetube. (See A, Fig. 7.) In all forms of X-ray apparatus some meansis necessary for varying the amount of light, and this variation may be. Fig. 8. Adjustable multiple spark-gap. accomplished in part by means of a spark-gap. The spark-gap is alsoessential because it enables the practitioner to use tubes of lowerresistance than would otherwise be possible, and, as will be seen later, tubes of low resistance have certain advantages over those with a highresistance. (See pages 46, 48.) If the spark-gap is several centimetresin length, the light may not be quite steady and there is noise. X-RAY EQUIPMENT i] * Adjustable Multiple Spark-gap. — To permit the use of a consider-able length of spark-gap and at the same time insure, for purposesof examination with the fluorescent screen, the requisite of a perfectlysteady light I some years since devised what I have called an adjust-able multiple spark-gap (see Fig. 8), which consists of a* series of smallbrass balls i^ centimetres in
