Binary star. Artwork of a binary star seen from a nearby planet. This is an RS Canum Venaticorum (RS CVn) binary, which typically consists of two stars in a tight gravitational bind, only a short distance apart with an orbital period usually in the range of several hours to a few days. One star is always a subgiant and the other is usually a main sequence star. RS CVn stars have large magnetic fields, which can give rise to flaring and large starspots (dark areas).
