Samples taken from patients with facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHMD) are cryogenically stored in liquid nitrogen for research. FSHMD is a usually inherited form of muscular dystrophy which causes progressive weakening and wasting of the skeletal muscles, initially of the face, shoulders and upper arms. These samples are part of a therapeutic trial investigating the use of antioxidant supplements in the treatment of muscular dystrophies. Photographed at Lapeyronie Hospital, Montpellier, France.
