Darjeeling Himalayan Railway steam train


Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, popularly known as Toy Train, was opened in 1881. One of three Indian mountain railways to be listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999. The other two are Nilgiri Mountain Railway, Kalka Shimla Railway. The narrow gauge route is still fully operational and runs from Silguri to Darjeeling. The Toy Train's route is 86 km long and rises from about 100 m above sea level at Siliguri to about 2,200 m at Darjeeling. It is still powered by a steam engine.
