Alim-Louis Benabid. Portrait of Professor Alim- Louis Benabid (seated), French surgeon, and the brain surgery team he uses in conjunction with the NeuroMate robot to treat Parkinson's disease. The robot implants 4 electrodes into the thalamus at the base of the brain through a hole in the skull. The hole is drilled by a surgeon, but its position and the route taken to the thalamus is chosen by NeuroMate using data obtained by Magnetic Resonance Imaging. When activated, the electrodes prevent the trembling caused by Parkinson's by electrically stimulating degenerated nerve cells. Benabid works at the Alain-Michallon Hospital in Grenoble, France.
