Crew of the Carnegie, a research yacht owned by the Carnegie Institution of Washington, and used by the Department of Terrestrial Magnetism. She was made out of wood and other non-magnetic materials to allow accurate measurements of oceanic magnetic data to be taken in order to improve the understanding of Earth's magnetic field. Carnegie was launched in 1909, and between then and 1921 completed 6 cruises. In 1928, after refurbishment, she commenced her seventh cruise, but was destroyed after an explosion during refuelling in 1929.
