A doctor performs a digital rectal exam (DRE) by inserting a lubricated, gloved finger into the rectum to feel for abnormalities. The bladder, rectum, and prostate are labeled. A rectal examination, commonly called prostate exam, is an internal examination of the rectum performed by a physician or other healthcare professional.
