Giotto's Bell Tower with the dome of the Duomo, Florence, in the background.

Giotto's Bell Tower (Campanile) with Brunelleschi's dome in the background. Work began on the tower in 1334 Giotto died some 3 years later and Pisano took over. The completed tower was metres high, well above the height decreed by the City's rulers. There are 414 steps to the top, in one single staircase, making things a litle tight for visiting tourists.
