Optical computer designer. Vincent Heuring, American computer scientist and co-designer of the Bit-Serial Optical Computer (BSOC). Heuring is holding a mock-up of a miniaturised version of the BSOC. The BSOC is the first optical computer able to store and manipulate data and instructions as pulses of light. Part of the BSOC device is seen in the background. Heuring and co-worker Harry Jordan think that current technology will enable the BSOC to be scaled down by a factor of 400, making it about 400 times faster (clock speed of 20 Gigahertz). Heuring and Jordan work at the Optoelectronic Computer Systems Center of the University of Colorado. Photographed in May 1993.
