Blue sky view of rusting canon pointing through a gunport in the seward wall ofFort San Antonio, Ancud, Chiloe Island, Chile

Ancud, on the north coast of Chiloe Island, was founded in 1769 as a Spanish stronghold. After Peruvian Independence in 1824, it became the Spanish Crown's last possession in South America. With rusting canons pointing out over the waters of the Canal de Chacao and Pacific Ocean, the San Antonio Fort was where the Spanish Crown's departure from South America was signed, after the capture of the fort in 1826. In this view, looking out to sea, we see a three-masted training ship of the Chilean Navy anchored in the distance.
