Albert Einstein and his wife, Elsa, photographed in the 1920s. Einstein was one of the greatest theoretical physicists in history. In 1905, whilst a patent clerk, he published 3 papers that would lead to his 1921 Nobel Prize: calculations on Brownian motion, the photoelectric effect and Special Relativity. In 1915 he published his Theory of General Relativity, explaining gravity as a distortion of space-time by a mass. In 1933 he moved to America, working on the Manhattan Project in WW2. Thereafter he was a prominent campaigner for nuclear disarmament. In 1952 he declined an invitation to become President of Israel.
