Mary, Queen of Scots (1542-1587), aka Mary Stuart was six days old when her father died and she acceded to the throne, reigning over Scotland from 1542 to 1567. She spent most of her childhood in France while Scotland was ruled by regents. With little direct experience of the dangerous and complex political situation in Scotland, Mary returned, arriving in Leith in August 1561. Four years later, she married her half-cousin, Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, and in June 1566 they had a son, James.
