A duck chases away a suitor that got too close to his mate in the Los Angeles River at Sepulveda Dam March 22 in Van Nuys, California. Many different species of birds and other wildlife inhabit the Sepulveda Basin floodplain before the dam. The basin is home to a wildlife refuge and several large recreation areas. The dam – constructed by the Army Corps of Engineers and completed in 1941 – underwent a hydraulic steel structure inspection March 22-23.
