This obelisk monument shows José Carvalho e Melo, known as Marques de Pombal, who was the prime minister of Portugal monarchy in the time of King José I. He reconstructed Lisbon after the devastating earthquake and flood of 1755 in a modern and for this time innovative way. Lisbon´s downtown is called "Baixa Pombalina" according his name.
