During ])eriods of excessive floods when, as , the alkalinity of the water will be insufficient, a so-lution of soda ash will be added to the water at a pointin the 60-inch main, 80 feet ahead of the point of applica-tion of the alum, in order to insure complete decomposi-tion of the coagulant. This treatment will be required atinfrequent intervals and then only for short times. The chemical handling apparatus for coagulant andsoda ash consists in each case of a pair of solution tanks, mixing devices and accurate adjustable orifices. Pipingfor sulphate of alumina solution is lead or hard rubberwith valves of acid-resisting bronze. The piping for thesoda ash is wrought iron with brass FILTER OPERATING STAND. The head house, which, like the filter house, is Ijuilt ofred brick, is located across the ends of the sedimentationbasins and over two of the filters and encloses in onewing the wash water and air tank. The other wing con-tains on four floors the ofiice and laboratory equipmentfor handling and apjilying chemicals, wash water pumjisand blowers and space for the storage of the chemicals. The general contractor for the work is the J. S. RogersCompany, of Moorestown, N. J. The filter equipment isbeing installed by the Roberts Filter Manufacturing Com-pany, of Darby, Philadelphia, Pa., and the low-lift pump-ing equipment by the De Laval Steam Turbine Company,of Trenton, N.
