Sleep apnoea surgery. Close-up of the mouth of a man who is undergoing surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion (SARPE) surgery to treat obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). SARPE surgery involves making an incision along the maxilla (upper jaw bone) and inserting retractors to stretch and alter the shape of the bone and hard palate. Here, following surgery from above to the bone between the nose and teeth, an incision is being made from below, ready to insert the retractor. OSA is a condition where airway obstruction and soft tissue collapse causes breathing to be interrupted while sleeping.
