Gloucester Cathedral, West Front and South side
In 1089 Sarlo, a French monk from Mount St Michel in Normandy, was the Abbot of the monastery, and he laid the first stone of the Norman abbey. The abbey was dedicated to St Peter, and had strong Royal associations. In 1216 Henry III was crowned here, and in 1327 King Edward II was buried here. Royal patronage and popular devotion enabled the magnificent extensions and decorations that followed during subsequent centuries. These include: the Lady Chapel; the Tower and the remodelling of the East End in very fine Perpendicular style. With the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII in 1540, the abbey became Gloucester Cathedral in 1541. The picture was drawn by William Warren and engraved by Benjamin Winkles.
