Lindisfarne Priory & Castle, Holy Island. View ENE across outer court & cloister to monastic church with rainbow arch (L): a diagonal vaulting rib joining piers which once supported the crossing tower. Early C12th Benedictine priory church built by Norman monks from Durham who re-established the former Saxon monastery whose priors had included its founder St Aidan (635) & St Cuthbert (). Remains visible to R of rainbow arch include the chapter house & warming house with Prior's lodging above. The castle was built as a Border fort in 1550 by Henry VIII using stone from the dissolved priory. Restored & converted into a private house for Edward Hudson (founder of Country Life) by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1903.
