Titanic ship and iceberg routes. Diagram showing the routes taken in 1912 by the RMS Titanic (yellow line) and the iceberg (red line) with which it collided on the night of 14 April 1912. The Titanic, the largest ocean liner ever built at the time and reputed to be unsinkable, sank with the loss of 1517 lives. It was on its maiden voyage across the North Atlantic between the ports (black dots) of Southampton, UK, and New York, USA, also calling at Cherbourg, France, and Queenstown (now Cobh), Ireland. The iceberg originated from Greenland around 3 months earlier, carried by currents (white arrows) first north and then south.
