The name means a 'virgin unmarried woman'. It is an enduring symbol to western democracy, as well as being the ultimate of the Doric order. Greece was at the height of its powers at the time, The Persian invasion took place in 480 In 1806 Thomas Bruce, the 7th Earl of Elgin bought the frieze(The Elgin Marbles) and sold them to the British Museum. The Greek Government is committed to return the stones.
