The Brunswick Monument (build 1879), Square des Alpes, Geneva, GE, Switzerland


Born in Brunswick on October 30th 1804, Duke of Brunswick-Luneburg Charles-Frederick August William, appointed Geneve as his residuary legatee after agreement after his death on August 18th 1873 . This was on the understandiong that Geneve would build him a mausoleum, based on the Scaliger tomb of Verona, in return for his munificence. It was finished six years later, architect Jean-Franel the lead designer. August Cain’s statue of the Duke on horseback originally sat atop the mausoleum but was relocated at ground level in the gardens for safety reasons.
