F WE are really in earnest in making the grounds beautiful, we must begin by studying our conditions critically and must not yield too readily to the popular notion that suc- cess with the rhododen- dron, the most beautiful of all flowering shrubs, is impossible in the northern states. Too often a spot is selected in dense shade, where nothing else would grow and where the soil is absolutely unfitted, and in the end the plants die and we join in the chorus that rhododendrons do not succeed in the north. As the best argument to the contrary, the writer might call attention to the now famous collection of rhododendrons and azaleas in Highland park, Rochester, N. Y., started by John Dunbar about fifteen years ago. Preparing to Plant. The proper location of the rhododen- dron border is the most essential point to be considered. In this connection we must bear in mind that it is not the extreme cold that kills the rhododen- drons, for the tops of the plants do not have to be covered in the winter, but it is the deep freezing of the ground, and the action of the winter sun on the frozen leaves, that does the damage. For this rea- son rhododen- drons should be plant- ed with a northern ex- posure, or in the shade of high and rather thin evergreens, or on the north side of tall, dense evergreen trees, so that the foliage will be shielded from the effects of th
