ATLASGAL (APEX Telescope Large Area Survey of the Galaxy) labelled images of the regions of the Milky Way visible from the southern hemisphere. The sector images (far right) show the viewpoints from Earth. The APEX (Atacama Pathfinder Experiment) data (red) is at submillimetre wavelengths (between infrared and radio waves), showing cold gas and dust only a few tens of degrees above absolute zero. The background data (blue) is infrared data from the Spitzer Space Telescope (GLIMPSE survey, Galactic Legacy Infrared Mid-Plane Survey Extraordinaire). Extra data is from the Planck satellite (submillimetre and infrared). Image released in February 2016.
