Mr. Towne has been prominently identified with several engineering socie-ties, and has filled with dignity many positions of honor and responsibility. Oneof the early members of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, he be-came its president in 1888 and was made chairman of the large party of Ameri-can engineers, representing the three great American engineering societies, whichvisited Europe in 1889. His contributions to technical literature, standard andcurrent, though mainly relating to his own work, have shown a scholarly mind,a rare breadth of culture, and a clear appreciation of the relation of theory topractice in useful ALFRED R.
