The Big Butterfly Count 2014 is a nationwide survey aimed at helping assess the health of our environment. It was launched in 2010 and has rapidly become the world's biggest survey of butterflies. Over 46,000 people took part in 2013, counting 830,000 individual butterflies and day-flying moths across the UK. The big butterfly count 2014 took place from Saturday 19 July – Sunday 10 August 2014. Nearly 45,000 people took part in the 2014 count, spotting almost 560,000 butterflies during the three-week recording period. Species which saw numbers increase were tortoiseshells, common blues, red admirals and speckled woods.
